Fernanda: Feeling Stronger

This week we are highlighting Fernanda, a ninth grader at Girls Leadership Academy! This is her first season running with SRLA and she is aiming to run the LA Marathon for this first time with her teammates, this March.

What motivated you to join SRLA?

I joined SRLA to improve my endurance, but also to push myself out of my comfort zone and accomplish something great. I have asthma, so when I joined SRLA and ran the first 5k I was so happy and relieved to know that I didn't have to use my inhaler.

Fernanda just completed her first half marathon and is so excited to continue her SRLA journey.

What is your favorite moment from SRLA?

My favorite moment has been to participate in the 5k, and recently in the 10k. I enjoy these moments because once I finish I can say "I trained for this!!! And I did it!!" Participating in these runs is very meaningful to me, and what makes me enjoy it more is that I have my sister and my best friend with me.

What has been your biggest challenge as an SRLA Runner? How did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge has been my asthma. I do enjoy sports but there are certain ones like running that have been very difficult for me. But more and more when I run I don't feel tired or out of breath. Instead I feel stronger and have gained stamina. I'm happy to say I don't use my inhaler anymore when it comes to the practice runs and actual runs.

What is one of your goals in SRLA?

My main goal has been to improve my endurance.

What is something you've learned as a part of SRLA?

I've learned about the importance of health, what you eat, how to take care of yourself so you don't end up sore after a run.

What is something about SRLA that brings you joy?

I just enjoy running in general I like being able to run and have my music blasting. Because I feel like I don't have to worry about anything when I'm running.

Anything else you'd like to share?

SRLA has helped improve my mental health. Less anxiety, and it has boosted my confidence.

Favorite place to run? Hollywood Reservoir

Best thing to drink while running? Oatmeal water, if not maybe gatorade

One thing I can't run without is... My headphones.

Favorite post-run snack is... Frozen grapes.

The best part of every race is... Finish Line, and all the snacks that they give you at the end.
